Is my bleeding heavy?

Most women have never been asked these seven questions, and they are the ones a clinician actually uses. Answer them and you will know whether what you live with meets the clinical description of heavy menstrual bleeding, and what to say at an appointment. It takes about two minutes, and nothing you enter leaves your phone.

First, one that matters on its own.

Do you bleed between periods, after sex, or at all since your periods stopped for good?

1. On your heaviest days, do you change a pad or tampon every two hours or less?

Or empty a cup that often.

2. Do you pass clots bigger than a R5 coin?

About 2.5cm across.

3. Does your bleeding last longer than seven days?
4. Do you ever use two kinds of protection at once?

A pad and a tampon together, for example.

5. In the last three months, have you bled through onto your clothes or bedding?
6. Do you often feel unusually tired, breathless or dizzy?

Especially around your period.

7. Do your periods stop you doing ordinary things?

Work, exercise, plans you would otherwise keep.

This is education, not a diagnosis, and it does not name a cause. Heavy bleeding has several, and telling them apart needs an examination and usually a blood test and a scan. If something feels wrong right now, WhatsApp 071 224 2788, day or night. In an emergency, go straight to your nearest emergency unit.
